“If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking.”

All good things to those who wait...right? Well, Aaron and I have been over the moon these past few weeks with Nateman. Wow- he has accomplished two really big feats in our little world that have been really really hard for him.

For the first one, let me back track a little...Aaron and I were married for over three years before Nate was born and we used to constantly judge other parents on their parenting choices and swore we would NEVER do that with our kids. HA!! You know you all did that too, right?! It's so easy until you are in the parent role. One thing for us was that we decided we would not be giving Nate a pacifier and we would help him to self soothe.

When Nate was born, after a LOOONG tiresome failed induction followed by sleepless nights full of Nate not wanting to nurse right away in the hospital, we were at our wits end. He was so very cranky and we were exhausted. Determined not to let them take Nate to the nursery away from us, we gutted it out. Then one day they came to take Nate to be circumcised. When he returned he was completely and utterly quiet and peaceful. They wheeled him in to us in his little incubator box thingie and there we saw it. He was all burrito-wrapped super tight and had a big green soothie pacifier in his mouth that was bigger than his face. Then and there we made our first unspoken joint parenting decision. The binky was here to stay. It was like baby crack and we would keep the supply flowin for as long as was needed. A classic case of choosing our battles.

Fast forward a bit...Nate became Nate with sensory problems galore. He mouthed everything so the bink stayed. It became a cork at parks and play dates to keep everything ELSE out of his mouth. Nate also started grinding his teeth- obsessively and loudly- so onward with the binky as well as chewy tubes. We felt he definitely needed that oral stimulation, especially at night, and again, we chose our battle. Also, we had just started to discover all of Nate's allergies and such and the binky provided comfort to a child that sought comfort in next to nothing.

A couple weeks ago we finally pulled the binkies for good and Nate adapted incredibly well. We are amazed and delighted. He just seemed to need to do it in his own time..much like everything else, we are learning.

Then, as if this wasn't monumental enough for us, it got even better. Nate decided he would poop on the potty. This is HUGE for us. He has been pee trained for a number of years now and wears underwear all day to school and such but he would NOT sit on a toilet and poop. Well, low and behold, he decided to drop the kids off at the pool this week with VERY minimal prompting from me.  He just needed to do it in his own time. So six and a half years later, the Portnoy house just might be diaper/pullup free.

I suppose even miracles take time...and having a rockstar for a kid might have helped too. :)

Send in the Clowns

Ok..now I am singing that Barbra song in my head.."Send in the clooooowns". hahahhahaha.
Today was the circus parade at Neve's preschool. They did a whole unit with a circus theme and today was the big parade led by "Foot Z" the clown. There was one SUPER excited little clown in our house today getting ready for clown day!
Foot Z did a little magic show first with the kids and made them balloon animal and things..

Then Neve got to help with one of the magic tricks.

Neve bowing after helping Foot Z.

Then in was time to line up for the parade. They had Foot Z lead the way and they played circus themed music. The kids pulled their stuffed animals in boxes they had decorated earlier in the week.

They got to take their parade all around the school and most of the classes had their kids lined up in the halls to watch the parade. Neve was so happy to know we went by Nate's classroom.

Totally fun circus parade. Yay preschool. :)

Happy Festivus...for the rest of us!!

Holiday Break finally arrived and Grandma Ding finally felt well enough to come visit. Yay! We have been staying busy by hittin the parks and bounce houses. Grandma Ding also watched Nate so Aaron and I could take Neve to the movies to see, "The Muppets". I loved that show as a kid.

We also went out to look at Christmas Lights. We went to the Mormon temple this year to walk around and look at their lights. Aaron and I make guesses on where they actually house the spaceship. hahahah..pretty lights though so we will overlook the insanity, just this once.
I was clearly annoying Nate. Sorry Buddy!

Then we carried out some Hanukkah and Christmas traditions.

Ready for Christmas morning!

Neve sang this for us before bedtime on Christmas Eve. I like her, "Yippee!". HA!

Then here are the kids coming down in the morning. It's super short as Mom Elf forgot to prep her camera and the memory card was full. OOPS! Oh well....

Nate's new bike.

Nate and Neve's new globe.

Nate's new Wii drawing game.

Princesses!

...and of course Nate's letter to Santa asked for "a snack", so he got it. :)

Hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday!! Thank you to all our family and friends! Dreading the next week without school, but we will make it somehow...right?!?

MOM: "Neve-what kind of party do you want for your birthday?" NEVE: "Pink! Pink! PInk!'

...and so it was.

Neve would not stop asking for a "PINK!" party for her 4th birthday...so we pinkified the place and went to town.
THE PINKALICIOUS PARTY
If you've never read Pinkalicious, it's basically about a little (bratty) girl that doesn't listen to her parents. She eats too many pink cupcakes and actually turns pink. Neve thinks the book is hilarious. It's a big hit in the preschool demographic. :)

Our balloon/face painting lady came again this year and Neve loved getting a cupcake for her cheek.

Neve's little friends were excited to get their faces painted too.
Neve's wonderful friends, Morgan, Addison, and Lindy getting their faces and hands painted.

Aaron is also the most awesome dad in the world...he took one for the Pinkalicious team. (...and he even had to go pick up pizza with his face like that-HA!!!)

Neve and her adorable friend, Addison. I love that these girls are such great friends.

There was a play castle they could color with markers and play inside of.

..and  they ran around the yard and on he (too small) playset. Neve said she was the Captain and these were her "Mateys". hahah. Where does she come up with this stuff??!

...and don't forget balloon flowers and unicorns!

Then it was lunch time!

Neve and her darling friend, Anna, playing unicorns. :)

Followed by cupcake time!

Make a wish!

Happy Birthday to YOU sweet Neve!

The girls then got to decorate their own cupcakes! One for themselves, and one for Mom.

Neve and her buddies, Madisyn, Shelby, and Morgan, making some awesome cupcake creations!

Neve's special buddy, Lindy. I just love this girl.

Next was story time!

The blanket was a big pile of PINK!

PRESENT TIME!

Neve thanking her sweet and thoughtful friends.

I loved her party..and I am so thankful for each and every one of her special little friends. I love watching their friendships grow and I am so lucky to call their moms MY friends too.

A big THANK YOU to Neve's Granny E and Grandma Ding for helping so much with the party and with Nateman. My mom (Grandma Ding) always stands behind me and helps me spoil the hell out of my one and only daughter. We are just so proud that she is ours. I couldn't ask for a smarter, funnier, kid.
